Export and Import Data

Using Configuration Packages, you can export and import any data in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central between different databases or companies. This is a standard Dynamics 365 Business Central functionality.

It might be useful if you have a beta environment with the Sana add-on running where you manage different data and test the Sana web store. If you want to migrate this data from beta environment to live you can simply export any required data and import it to the live database.

Using Configuration Packages in Dynamics 365 Business Central there is no need to re-create already existing data on a new database or company. You can simply export any data (tables with their fields and field values) from one database or company to another.

Create and export the configuration package

Step 1: In Dynamics 365 Business Central click on the  and enter Configuration Packages.

Step 2: To create a configuration package, click New.

On the General FastTab, enter the identifier (code) of the package and its name, then select the language ID.

Then, select the tables you want to export data from.

Step 3: Export the configuration package. There are two ways to do this. You can use the one which is the most appropriate for you:

• Click Export Package. It allows to save the configuration package as the ".rapidstart" file, which delivers the package contents in a compressed format.
• Click Export to Excel. The configuration package with the selected tables will be saved to Microsoft Excel.

Import the configuration package to Dynamics 365 Business Central

Step 1: Switch to the Dynamics 365 Business Central environment where you want to import data. Click on the  and enter Configuration Packages.

• If you saved your configuration package as the ".rapidstart" file, then click Import Package and select your file.
• If you saved your configuration package as the Microsoft Excel file, then click Import from Excel and select your file.

When the configuration package is uploaded, you can open it and see the list of tables and the number of records per each table which will be imported.

Step 2: Click Apply Package to import data from the configuration package. If for some reason a table data cannot be imported, it will be highlighted with red color. Click on the No. of Package Errors field to see the error message. Once the issue is fixed, you need to apply the package again.

You can also validate the configuration package before applying it, by clicking Validate Package.
